How to choose a pest control company in Ontario
The work Ontario pest control companies take on most often is a short list: mice and rats, ants, wasp nests, bed bugs and cockroaches, in that order on this directory. Most companies handle several of them, so the useful question is not who does pest control, but who does your pest, at your address, the way you need it done.
Start with the pest
Each listing shows a service grid. A tick means the company says it treats that pest or offers that service; a cross means it says it does not; "not enough info" means it says nothing either way. Bed bugs are the clearest case for reading the grid closely. Of the 531 companies here that treat bed bugs, 134 say they offer heat treatment, which some households prefer to chemical treatment. For mice and rats, look for rodent proofing as well as treatment: a company that seals entry points is working on why the mice got in, not only on the ones already inside.
Check the licence
Ontario requires an exterminator licence from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for anyone who applies pesticides as an exterminator, and a business that does the work for pay needs an operator licence. Technicians may work under a licensed exterminator's supervision. The grid shows whether a company states a licence on its own website; we have not checked any of them. Ask for the licence number on the first call, and ask which products will be used. Every pesticide registered in Canada carries a Pest Control Product (PCP) number on its label.
Renting, or a landlord?
Ontario's maintenance standards require a rental building to be kept reasonably free of rodents, vermin and insects, and openings in the building to be screened or sealed against pests. If you rent, the landlord is usually the one to call first. If you own a building, look for companies marked for commercial work: 583 on this directory take commercial jobs, from restaurants and warehouses to apartment buildings.
Read the rating with the review count
A 5.0 from three reviews tells you much less than a 4.8 from four hundred. The listings on each city page sort companies by rating weighted by how many reviews stand behind it, and every card shows both numbers. Read a handful of recent reviews for the pest you have: a company praised for wasp nests may never have treated a bed bug problem.
What to ask on the first call
Ask what the inspection involves and whether it is free, how many visits the treatment needs, what you need to do before and after each visit, and what the guarantee covers if the pest comes back. 504 companies here say they offer a guarantee, so it is fair to ask for its terms in writing. If you need someone today, filter for same-day or emergency service. If children, pets or a home business make low-toxicity products matter to you, filter for eco-friendly options and ask what those products are.
